- The Barbie of "Barbie Diaries" is altogether different. She has strengths: working hard in school, singing, playing guitar, and a good sense of right and wrong. But, for once, she has weaknesses: shyness, and a lack of belief in herself. This Barbie was still slim and blonde, but she was more like a real-life young woman, who encounters the problems that real-life teens encounter: making new friends, dating, gossip, and getting involved in school. The girls who see these Barbie movies are unlikely to ever grow wings and become a princess, or be turned into a swan. They are likely to be forced to make choices that may not be easy to make. In that sense, "Barbie Diaries" is exemplary of its type, and something that, hopefully, will be continued in later films
